Why Is It Important to Research Correctly?

If you are wondering what the big deal about online research is, this section is for you. Here is why online research is a good skill to have in today’s digital era.

    • It keeps you updated on the latest information.

Due to constant innovation, we see new developments every day. Even if it is technology, medicine, science, or sociology, new research continues to replace the old one. If you are smart about online research, you will never be behind on the latest advancements.

    • It makes you well-informed and credible.

If you are a pro at online research and know your way around the Internet, you are good at differentiating bad resources from good ones. You are also able to single out high-quality research from a bunch of bad ones. These feats make your word trustworthy.

    • It assists with problem-solving.

If you are good at researching online, you can find solutions to problems in a jiffy. This is because you are aware of where to look for answers. This makes you a good problem solver since you can make informed decisions. On top of this, you are also able to come up with new ideas.

    • It makes you a valuable professional resource.

Now if you are able to do all of the feats mentioned above, you are an invaluable employee to your employer. You can put your good research skills to use to come up with new ideas, solve problems, understand competition, and come up with strategies to make a difference.

Steps for Researching the Right Way

Even if you are conducting academic research for your thesis or content research, you need to get your ducks in a row. It is important to follow the right steps to gather information effectively. These steps help you research productively. While you may not have to follow all the steps every time, it is smart to know the right methodology.

    • Define Your Topic

This is an important yet understated fact. Yes, most of us already know what to research before we begin, but we often miss something important, research goals. These goals mean breaking down your topic into different components. For this, you need to have an outline of all the things you want from your research. Only then, you will be able to get what you want from your research.

    • Choose the Right Tools

Before you formally begin your research online, deciding which tools you will need is important. It depends on whether your research is qualitative or quantitative. If you are going down the qualitative route, you need the right statistical tools to process the numbers. Apart from this, you should also determine where to research. Will you have to join an online focus group or get access to scholarly journals?

    • Gather and Evaluate the Information

This is the point where you start your research. As you start your online research, you need to be mindful that not all sources on the internet are credible. Credible resources include internationally recognized journals, government resources, and official websites. Websites have domain ratings to gauge their credibility. There are tools to check a website’s domain rating. Ideally, you should go for websites with a domain rating higher than 75. Moreover, you should only gather current information.

    • Check if the Research Matches Your Goals

When you gather all the information from your research, you should check if it is what you were originally looking for. To do this, match your findings with the research goals. If your intent is satisfied, you are good to go for polishing and concluding your research. If not, you need to research again. Lastly, it is also a good practice to cross-check your references.

    Best Tools for Online Research

Even though research is not an easy feat, the good news is that the internet offers multiple tools to help us research effectively. These tools range from academic search engines to task management. They help you save time by streamlining your research in ways like managing tasks and references, finding journals, etc.

    • EndNote

This one is for all the academic and technical writers. Research goes hand in hand with citations, which are a tedious thing. EndNote allows you to manage your citations and references. It automatically creates a bibliography of your work as well. It is also useful for professionals who frequently deal with technical documentation.

    • Google Scholar

Google is a versatile search engine. But Google Scholar helps you with academic research. You can use academic keywords to find literary articles and journals. It is especially helpful if you are writing a white paper or a thesis and need credible sources for your literature review. Moreover, journals and articles on Google Scholar are usually credible, but it doesn’t hurt to be extra careful.

    • Trello

This is a task management tool that can help you immensely in your research. You can make cards (tasks) for each separate component of your research and add links for helpful resources related to them. It also gives you a clear view of your research progress. Moreover, if you are working on a company research project, you can add your colleagues to the Trello board as well. This makes collaboration much easier.

    • Scopus

Scopus is a database consisting of more than 25,000 peer-reviewed and vetted academic resources. It has journals and papers from multiple disciplines, which means you can find stuff from medicine, technology, economics, etc. What sets Scopus apart is its data analysis tools to help you measure the impact of different resources. This helps decide which journals to cite in your research.

    • Academia.edu

If you are someone who has to research frequently, then you should be a part of an online community of researchers. Academia.edu connects you to a community of researchers around the globe. You can share papers, promote research, and collaborate with like-minded individuals. Apart from this, you can also find tips and tricks to improve your research game.

    Bonus Tips for Online Research

Online research can be overwhelming for beginners. However, it doesn’t have to be. Here are some helpful tips to help you get effective output from your online research.

    • To quickly skim a page for information, press ctrl+F and write the keyword in the search bar to see if the page has something on it or not.
    • Only use AI to assist you in research. Do not depend on it for answers as AI tends to hallucinate (give factually incorrect information). Copilot is pretty handy as it provides references for almost all of its information.
    • Make sure you have dependable internet connectivity during your research. If you have not one, you can check out Xfinity Internet plans for affordable high-speed internet with good reliability.
    • Websites with .org, .edu, or .gov in their URLs have reliable information. If you are working on a sensitive topic, it is a good idea to use these sources for research.
    • Make sure you are only using recent resources for research. Information more than 2 years old is usually considered outdated.
